Irritation vs. True Allergy: How to Tell the Difference

It is extremely important to distinguish between temporary eye irritation and a genuine allergic reaction. Both manifest differently and require different actions.

Temporary Irritation (Sensitivity)

If your eyes are slightly red or feel dry immediately after your appointment, it is usually just a mild irritation. This is caused by the minimal fumes released by the lash adhesive during the curing process.

• Symptoms: Mild stinging, minor redness of the eyeball, or slight tearing immediately after application.
• Duration: The irritation typically subsides completely within 24 hours, once the adhesive is fully cured.

Lash Glue Allergy (Contact Allergy)

A true allergy is usually directed against the main ingredient of almost all lash adhesives: cyanoacrylate. It often builds up over months or years – meaning you may tolerate eyelash extensions perfectly at first, and the reaction suddenly occurs during your tenth refill.

• Symptoms: Distinct swelling of the eyelids (often looking like “puffy pillows”), intense itching right at the lash line, and flaky or weeping skin patches on the lid.
• Duration: The symptoms will not subside without removing the extensions and typically worsen with each subsequent appointment.

To reduce the risk of irritation and sensitivity to an absolute minimum, I have established strict quality and working standards in my atelier in Schwäbisch Gmünd:

1. Certified Medical-Grade Adhesives: I use exclusively high-quality lash adhesives from premium German manufacturers that are dermatologically tested, solvent-free, and eye-safe.

The Patch Test Before Your First Appointment

• How it works: We meet at the atelier about 48 hours before your actual new set appointment. I apply 3 to 5 very short extensions per eye.

What Can You Do Yourself for Optimal Compatibility?

Proper preparation and aftercare go a long way in keeping your eyes relaxed:

• Avoid caffeine before your appointment: Caffeine stimulates blood circulation and can cause involuntary eyelid twitching. Quiet lids make application much easier and prevent your eyes from opening slightly, letting fumes in.
• Arrive completely makeup-free: Leftover mascara, eyeshadow, or oily creams can react with the adhesive, compromising retention and increasing the risk of irritation.
• Keep them dry for the first 24 hours: Avoid getting water on your lashes during the first day so that the adhesive can finish outgassing and curing completely.
