Eyelash Extension Aftercare: How to Make Them Last
by Sofie Reinik 3 min read
The most common disappointment with eyelash extensions rarely has anything to do with the studio – and almost always with the first 48 hours and the daily routine afterwards. In my atelier in Schwäbisch Gmünd I see both: clients whose extensions hold beautifully until the refill, and those who’ve lost half of them after a week. The difference is almost never the lash itself, but the aftercare. Here’s everything you need to know.
The first 24 to 48 hours are decisive
Lash adhesive needs time to cure fully. During this phase it’s sensitive to moisture and steam. So right after your appointment:
- No water, no steam, no sauna for about 24 hours.
- Don’t rub, don’t pick – even if it feels unfamiliar.
- No swimming and no intense, sweaty workouts on the first day.
Anyone who respects this short rest period lays the foundation for the entire lifespan.
Daily care – easier than you think
Many people believe extensions are delicate divas. The opposite is true: they actually want to be cleaned.
Yes, you may (and should) wash your lashes
A common misconception is to keep the lashes completely dry. But sebum, make-up residue and skin flakes collect at the lash base – and that’s exactly what dissolves the adhesive over time. So clean your lashes every one to two days, gently, with a dedicated lash shampoo and a soft brush. Then cool-dry or air-dry and brush through.
Brush through in the morning
A clean lash brush in the morning keeps the extensions in shape and stops them from sticking together. Ten seconds is enough.
The biggest longevity killers
In my experience it’s always the same things that cost extensions prematurely:
- Oil-based products. Cleansing oils, rich eye creams and some make-up removers dissolve the adhesive. Stick to oil-free products around the eyes.
- Waterproof mascara. It only comes off with rubbing and oily removers – both poison for extensions. With a good set you won’t need mascara anyway.
- Sleeping face-down. Sleeping with your face in the pillow bends the lashes overnight. A silk pillowcase or sleeping on your back or side helps.
- Picking and rubbing. A loose extension sometimes itches – please keep your fingers away anyway. When you pull, your own lash may well come with it.
Why some always shed – and that’s a good thing
Even with perfect care you’ll lose a few extensions every day. That isn’t your fault, it’s biology: each natural lash runs through a growth cycle and eventually sheds on its own – along with the extension on it. That’s exactly why there’s a refill every two to three weeks, where I top up what has grown out. With good aftercare you need refills less often, saving time and money in the long run.
In short
If you take away just three things: keep them dry for the first 24 hours, use oil-free products and clean gently and regularly. That’s how you get the maximum out of your set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get eyelash extensions wet?
Yes, and after the first 24 hours you really should. Gentle cleansing every one to two days removes sebum and make-up residue at the lash base. That build-up is exactly what dissolves the adhesive and shortens longevity.
Which products damage eyelash extensions?
Mainly oil-based products, rich eye creams and waterproof mascara. Oil dissolves the adhesive, and waterproof mascara only comes off with rubbing. Use oil-free products around the eyes and your extensions will last noticeably longer.
How do I clean my eyelash extensions properly?
Gently cleanse the lash base with a dedicated lash shampoo and a soft brush, cool-dry, then comb through with a clean spoolie. It sounds involved but takes under a minute and is the single biggest factor for longevity.
Why do my extensions fall out so quickly?
Usually from rubbing, oil-based products or sleeping face-down in the pillow. Skipping cleansing is another common reason. A few shed naturally every day, which is normal and gets topped up at your refill.
